PRIMARY DRIVEWAY
Parent's vehicles entering the school grounds have caused concern regarding the safety of the students. Parents are reminded not to use the school driveway and parking area to drop off or collect children in the morning and afternoon periods.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Thank you to everyone who is ensuring that their children are wearing schools hats now that the weather is becoming hotter.  However, there are still some students who are forgetting to wear a hat or cap.  These students are directed to play in shaded areas.

Classes for 2010
This week the teachers begin formation of classes for 2010.  In this newsletter there is a small form to send back to the school if you know your family is leaving the school or if you will be late returning.

Please return these forms to your child’s teacher as soon as possible.  That will help in class formation and preparation for 2010.

There are still a small number of vacancies in some grades for next year.  If you know of someone who may be interested please ask him or her to phone the school for an application form.

Lockdown Practice
Today in accordance with the Department’s regulations and our school policy, we will be having a Lockdown practice.  This is part of what we do at Kingsgrove to ensure that if an emergency occurs we are well rehearsed.  We also have periodic fire drills and lock out practices.

CHESS REPORT
Kingsgrove Public School took part in the Primary Schools One-Day Chess Tournament at St George Leagues Club on 4 November.

The team comprised of Brandon Lee 4S, George Yik 5J and Andrew Wu 5P played seven rounds of chess against teams from eight other schools in the St George District.

Kingsgrove came 5th out of 33 teams.  The team played extremely well and missed out on a place by half a point.  Special mention must be made of Brandon Lee who won six out of seven games.  Brandon lost only one game to a former state representative student in a very tense and tight struggle.

All the students were exceptionally well behaved and demonstrated the highest levels of sportsmanship during their campaign against battle-hardened veterans of the chess world.

Well done to those student and hopefully we’ll do even better next year.

HEAD LICE
There has been an outbreak of head lice at school and your child may have contracted the condition.  We are asking that all parents examine their child’s hair for signs of lice infestation.  The lice themselves are often hard to find because they move around on the head.  Therefore, you should be looking for eggs or nits.  These appear as tiny silvery white specks attached to the hair shaft near the scalp.  Dandruff and hairspray may look similar but these are easily brushed away, the eggs are not.  Other signs of lice infestation may be a red rash and scratch marks on the scalp, nape of the neck or behind the ears.

If your child has contracted head lice do not be alarmed.  Although the condition is unpleasant, it is easily treated with a specialised treatment, which is available from your local chemist.  After treatment use a fine tooth comb to remove the dead lice and eggs.  Any articles which may harbour lice such as clothes, towels and bed linen should be washed in hot water and detergent.  Combs and brushes should also be washed in hot soapy water.

As head lice are highly contagious it is suggested that you examine and treat all members of the family at the same time.

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING
Thank you to all those families who have sent old phones along to our collection.  We still need more.

CRICKET REPORT
On Friday, 13 November Kingsgrove played Lugarno at Olds Park.  The seniors and juniors were playing for pride as their semi final chances had been dashed the previous week.  The seniors were once again very competitive with both their batting and bowling.  Like previous weeks, our final run total was not quite enough.  The boys put in a great effort in the field, but in the end, the Lugarno team was just too good on the day.  Great batting effort by Scott and George had an excellent game in the field.  Final scores were Kingsgrove 5/36 lost to Lugarno 4/59 off 14 overs.

The juniors picked up their form from previous weeks and had an excellent victory over Lugarno.  The boys batted well and backed this up with an excellent performance in the field.  It was a great team effort.  Kingsgrove won 40 to 31.
